Books 143: several

Searching for more illustrations of other books from Bob Artley I mainly found some from A Country School Marion No. 7, I already bought. Here are currently my favourite 2 pics shown (squeaky pants)

https://www.biblio.com/book/country-school-marion-7-bob-artley/d/1131016885#gallery-3

Searching for The Sugar Creek Gang, I found on one of the early publishers Scripture Press some books with boys on the cover:  "4s & 5s Bible Times (Take-Home), Summer 2025, and another boy in "4s & 5s Teaching Guide", Summer 2025.

Concerning The Sugar Creek Gang books, there are 10 audiobooks called "Lost in the Blizzard" on moodyaudio. About 15 minutes preview each. There were other audio books, the original radio series, and a German Adventure series. Also see my post about ebooks and foreign editions. (With different covers and some with illustrations).

Book 141: Kai aus der Kiste

The famous 1988 East German kids movie/musical has the 10 yo main character (played by 13 yo Christoph Zeller, shown above) not in bibs but pants with suspenders. Set in 1923 Berlin. I have uploaded a rare 30 minutes documentary (Kai für Kiste gesucht) mainly about the casting (some boys in jeans but not bibs). The 1926 novel has him in bibs on the cover, several different edition also vinyl and cassettes. Shown in the clip at 5. At least some editions are illustrated, also shown at 4.

English title: Bill of the Black Hand - A very tall story. Author: Wolf Durian. I don't own the book and can't say if there are mentions of bibs. Young street boy. But Berlin is not rural. He also wrote the prequel magazine "Der heitere Fridolin". There is also a 1960 TV movie, but I haven't found any pics or clips of that.

I have the movie on my sailor suit blog, sailor suits, rating 7. There are also stage plays but I haven't found any showing bibs.

Book 140: Das Internat am Genfer See

By coincidence I found this mid 90s boarding school book series aimed at girls. There are 10 books. In this 5th book (Die Entführung) there's a girl sitting in bibs on the cover. Obviously Carmen from Puerto Rico. Her parents are divorced and she wants to unite them by writing a fake letter about a kidnapping. But things go wrong.

I don't own any of the books. So I can't say if there are mentions of bibs. Probably not. In book 6 there's a girl who wants to be a boy (not in bibs at least not on the cover). I like plots about boarding schools (like "Schloss Einstein") but I can't even say if it's a school for girls only. At least there are plots with boys (Spanish exchange student, young boy, not in bibs). Different authors.

Schneider books are thin. Fonts are quite large and usually there are illustrations. (Not sure about these late ones). Modern books are usually much thicker. Schneider books were the most famous books up to the 80s in Germany.

One of the famoust book series for boys was the Schreckenstein book series about a boys boarding school near one for girls. Made into a move.

Book 139: Vos: Up the Hayloft Ladder

Finding new books on Google Books is quite difficult (maybe with advanced settings or more search terms) especially novels. But I like these farm memoirs. After finding the brand JC Penney in Clay Farmers, I did a search for "JC Penney overalls" and "Penney's overalls" (and I found the term "bibbed overalls" and also added 2023, 2022). So I found this 2013 biography with a long preview, spanning 8 decades.

A brief description on page 52 about the new denim pair from Penney's and going to school "relishing the smell and feeling the stiffness of new denim". A new smell story (smell outside school in fresh air I never thought of).

Another interesting scene on page later. Bathing once a week, I think this is set in the 60s, was common, but changing underwear (long ?) once a week as well I never heard of. At least he wore some. The girl behind him at school smelled his urine. (I wonder how often girls in a dress bathed and changed pants, but maybe she was a city girl. I wonder how she could smell urine with the smell of denim, manure and other odors).

I found some few more books. Willingham: "Life in the Country Through the Eyes of a Kid" (2022) has 12 mentions. And a handsome boy on the cover. There are several small b&w photos in the book but I think none showing bibs.

I'm currently reading more Sugar Creek Gang books on daytime and "Bristle Face" on evenings but not every day.

Update 2: The River (1984)

I have again watched my DVD (mainly boys, rating 6). The movie starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek (both also in bibs but Spacek very briefly) is still great and I like handsome Shane Bailey (jeans scenes rating 9 at 44). Unfortunately, there are rather few good scenes of his bibs. I've uploaded these 2 new pics and re-uploaded 2 from the 1st update also showing another boy.

About 4 rear views, one partial, one partial with a jacket, one muddy from a distance (see 1st update) and this full but dark lit scene at 1h34. Cycling is also very brief. Only one sitting scene in bibs while welding (also partially close up at 35). Rear view of chubby Billy is extremely brief.

And no really full front view like some good publicity pics (like pic 18 on IMDb) but they did not appear like this in the movie and is mirrored.

There is also a Blu-ray, but the DVD has perfect quality to me (unless you have a large plasma TV or need print-outs).

I also checked the 1985 novelisation by Stephen Bauer. 2x overalls and 3x coveralls. But I think only mentioned with men wearing them.

Main entry with 3 pics also showing the little girl and Billy (front)

You did it!

 ELT course
-Year: 2023
-Year in film: 2020s
-Country: France (, USA)
-Who in bibs: girls
-Available on DVD: yes *
-I own: no
-Bib occurrence: very low ?
-Rating:  3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: At least 2 young girls, one sitting in long bibs, one running in dark blue tight shortalls.

Pic from the official book resources site from publisher Editions Bordas. (Used under fair use license). Probably this is just a general photo from a book and not appeared as video. Currently there's just a course for level/grade 6e. Not sure if there's (already) a DVD, DVD-ROM or just online clips.

Unpictured: a girl in shortalls in unit 1 Middle School is Cool! (book preview on calameo). As this is a new course I have to recheck this when more is available.

At least some clips were filmed in the USA, school and camp with US kids. For more info see my school TV blog. One short clip is taken from series Anne with an E.

Update: I have removed the pic as it turned out to be a stock photos. It's possible that the other pic I found is a stock pic as well.

Book 136: Bliedung: Aufregung um Tortoi

I found this 1979 book showing a boy in bibs or shortalls. It's about a boy called Bernd Zeller who ran away to river Havel because his mom gave away his turtle. Set in Berlin. I think West German publisher Punkt Verlag. I can't say much more so I don't know if it's illustrated (probably not) I think there's no movie about it (maybe a plot within a series?). So it's unclear who's that boy. The author is also rather unknown. I don't own this book.

Chapters:

Der Brief

Lang ist die Havel, wenn man sucht

Vertrauen mißbraucht man nicht

Manches konnte man nicht erwarten

Merkwürdig diese Schildkröten

Tortoi ist einmalig

Das kann doch nicht wahr sein

Book 135: Earl Hamner: Goodnight John-Boy

Some months ago I bought this 2002 book. 18x23 cm, 222 pages. Yesterday, I have finished it. Next to a short biography of Earl Hamner, his family, his books, movies and series there are many b&w photos of The Waltons (including how they look later) and more of interest his family/siblings/ancestors (including headshots of 2 of his younger brothers aged ~10, but not in bibs, one is James, role-model for Jim-Bob, the other Bill, I think not made into the series).

More than 80% are brief summaries of every single episode (available elsewhere), but most of them are commented by either actor, staff or a fan. Some interesting behind the scenes backgrounds but nothing bibs related.

There are also some few weblinks but mainly fansites, probably most defunct now. Also a chapter about the Waltons museum. And a cast list indluding guest stars, latter one of course partial. The book cover is a mix from different seasons. (Jason and John-Boy ~season 1, most others ~season 6).

There are some more TV movies and specials than I remembered (1982-1997). I have to re-check those. I still haven't seen the 2 recent 2020s movies. Main entry, rating 10

List 63: Comic characters in bib overalls

After finding the Pierino comics, I searched for other (human) comic characters as I haven't found a good list. Most are little boys, most famous probably Dennis the Menace (pic 1, usually wearing red bibs, sometimes blue). The character is 5 1/2 yo but older in the series and movies. Many comics also released as movies or vice versa. I have some entries but still have to add them. I also have to check mangas and animated movies. Pic below from left: Tits, Big Boy, Timmy, Beanie the Meanie, Pat the Brat, Beany and Cecil, Our Gang, Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact.

Book 133: Pierino (comic)

I have re-checked the movies (boys rating up to 7) and searched for books. It's not easy as Pierino means Little Johnny or Peter and you find many unrelated books like Peter and the Wolf. There are some few books with Alvaro Vitali on the cover but I think these are just joke collections. Maybe the plot of the movies is not deep enough for a novel and just based on slapstick and erotic humor.

But then I found this adult comic series 1982-1986.

55 issues + 4 supplements, publisher Edifumetto, drawings by Stelio Fenzo. In Spain published as Jaimito (there are again others with this title).

At least in issue N.36 "Lo scopatore della mensa F." there's an older blond teen boy or young man sitting in class, first row in white bibs (page 36). I have checked many samples and 2 full issues but haven't found other illustrations.

Quite interesting but in the school the boy(s) in bibs are ~10 yo. The illustrations are simple and I don't like them.

I am currently searching for other comics with bibs, I already have found some and will make a list soon. Main entry (also read the upcoming post)

Book 132: Wingert: Fritzchen Frisch im Försterhaus

Another vintage book, I recently bought and already have completely read. This 1973 book is part 2/2 in a series and more were probably planned. Unfortunately no mentionings of bibs scenes inside. It's illustrated by famous Walter Rieck (same as the cover), but no more bibs inside.

Book 1 (Fritzchen Frisch und seine Streiche - Ferienwochen mit Schwung und Pfiff = and his pranks holiday weeks with power) showing the boy in bibs jumping over a fence, but I assumed bibs scenes rather in book 2 due to the forest setting.

A typical but rather weak adventure book for boys and girls aged 10 and up. Thick 144 pages. Plot: Boy and girl visiting twice their uncle, who also has 2 kids. Robber and school plot. The 1st book obviously has a summer holiday setting. Publisher Neuer Jugendschriften-Verlag, Karo Buch book series.

The author also wrote "Klein, aber pfiffig" (young boy in bibs, I mentioned before). Probably poor or even worse. Maybe someone could/should re-write such books.

Book 131: Bob Artley: A Country School Marion No. 7

I recently bought 2 books including this. In novel Charley there was an addendum about a general research of farm work in the 1910s and search for the real Charley. And there, works of Bob Artley were mentioned. He was mainly a cartoonist and had a book about farm chores. But even better is this 1989 one about his experiences with schools. There is a 2006 book called Bob Artley's Country School Days, probably a re-edition. 94 pages as well, letter size.

I found several of the single cartoons on the web. Almost all boys wearing bibs. Set in 1925 up to the 30s. 2 pics are very good and are about noises. One kid said "Well, well. Here comes a squeaky new pair of pants!" (A boy walking in new Christmas corduroys in class, surprisingly not bibs.) Another pic showing a boy in bibs making sounds with his shoes.

There is much more text (by Artley) than assumed. I haven't read it all yet. On the rear cover is a poor b&w photo of boys standing in bibs (author and brother in last row). Other plots are about different odors (some I never thought of before like forgotten mittens on the stove), the way to school, picnics etc. One pic is about a nighmare standing in long johns in school. The boys liked their bibs (instead of knickers) and had winter and summer underwear.

I like farm memoirs especially concerning one-room schoolhouses. Great illustrations. For other books including smells and sounds and movies with one-room schools check out my topics page.

Books 136: Several vintage books

I'm searching for new books and found several books, mainly from German publisher Neuer Jugendschriften Verlag. Most have illustrations (mainly by Walter Rieck) but with some exceptions I can't say if having (good) illustrations or descriptions of bibs inside. Probably not, escpecially descriptions, so I won't buy any of these. Most of these books were published in the 70s. And probably they just drawn (unrelated) kids in typical clothes (same as boys in Lederhosen in 50s books).

Boys:

-Karlstad: Sehr verdächtig! confirmed illustration (original: Det tomme huset)

-Höfling: Die drei Abenteurer (set of 3) chubby boy Fränzchen

-Sibley: Jonathan Mark (series) young boy, picture books, confirmed illustrations

-Fox: Der Vogel, der Türen aufmacht (original: The Hairy Brown Angel)

-Wingert: Klein, aber pfiffig (young boy)

-Wingert: Fritzchen Frisch (2 books), 1 bought one

-Theuermeister: Uli ist pfiffig (young boy)

Girls:

-Schröder: Kalifornisches Abenteuer (teen girl, pictured, I mentioned before)

Books 129: several "coveralls" one-room schoolhouse

I searched on Google Books for coveralls and "one-room". Some interesting plots. Inside the book later also search for overalls.

Gail Jenner: One Room: Page 58 Dress Code. A girl in the 1920s hated dresses and usually had a dress under her overalls. At school she had to remove her overalls. The girl said that she can't because she has no dress underneath as a dress "jammed" in overalls are messed after riding to school on horse. Dress code changed by teacher.

Montell: Tales from Kentucky One-Room School Teachers: 2x spanking, I think by female teacher. Page 121: The boy had on new overalls and almost blistered  the teacher's hand. Page 142: 8th grader Earl first brought a log instead of a switch then a switch and the teacher made him pull up his overalls and switched him well. (But he continued making trouble).

Duncan: The Fields of Yesterday: A boy peed in his bibs while sitting in school. But it didn't show up as the bibs were dark.

Comer: Life Through the Seasons: A 5 yo boy wearing striped bibs got lots of comments about his coveralls and about being able to go to school.

Bloggers (French English course)

English course grades 3-6
Year: 2017
Year in film: 2013 ?
Country: UK, (USA)
Who in bibs: Kirstine 11
Available on DVD: yes *
I own: no
Bib occurrence: very low ?
Rating: 5/10 ?
Rating: *****
Comment: I found this and some other French English courses for my other blog. Publisher: Editions Maison des Langues, author Fréderic Chotard. 11 yo Kirstine from Glasgow in great bibs and dental braces.

The pic is from a preview of unit 8 (from Calameo) of grade 6 (6e). HD pics can be zoomed. She presents a 2013 video about Scotland, but not sure is she's included there (probably not). Videos are available on DVD and USB stick.

There are several other videos including vlogs, but I don't know of others in bibs. I found one pic of a younger girl in shortalls, but obviously just a tiny pic only.

A related course from same authors is Blockbuster, with an older teen girl on the cover (maybe an apron due to brown straps), also a photo of a female reggae singer called Koffee *2000 in bibs (partial, book Tle, terminale), I have to search for clips of her. Also young boys in skirts (2de).

Update: I forgot another girl in blue bibs or shortalls in unit 16 (2de). But probably just a photo.

Book 127: Walter Baran: Feet First: A Memoir

I like Google Books. You can search for everything and often even have a very large preview. And even with a snippet view you can search a book for words. Often, at least one edition has a preview. But there's also a con, as you find too much when searching for "overalls" and that also has a different meaning. So I had searched for other keywords like coveralls, one-room schoolhouse, farm overalls, etc. Now the time search also works, but you find very few recent publications (5 pages, <50 books in the last 2 years and most of them are poor).

Recently, I've searched for "tobacco juice" after having found it in "Christy". I almost have finished that. There are mean boys spitting out tobacco juice. So I found this and other books.

This 2003 book has 2 kids, maybe girls in bibs on the cover and 5 mentionings of overalls. Many, very short chapters, covering different time settings, 1900s but I think mainly the 1930s. Obviously most don't like wearing overalls. A boy was instructed by his mom to unbuckle the straps and put down the bib for the school photograph. A girl had to wear her brother's overalls and hoped not to be seen by others she know.  And at the first work, one had to wear the worst overalls and shirt he hates.

I haven't read all of it. Probably also lots of other interesting stories. Farm memoirs are the best. Also photos, but I haven't found one showing bibs. Most modern books are also available as ebook. And cheaper. You don't have to wait and no shipping costs and custom fees. I still have much to read, especially digital books.

I also have added the 2015 lost comment of The Waltons barefoot list

Book 126: Donna Seim: Charley

After having checked all my posts rated 5-10 for books (~1,500 posts), I checked some booksites for novels, I found this one on librarything, recently published tagged farm and similar tags. Published in 2013. And I even bought it.

It's about a 12 yo foster boy set in 1910 Boston, based on true events.

It has some nice illustrations by Susan Spellman also showing him and few others in bibs including milking a cow and other farm scenes. One is obviously a younger girl.

I only have read some few pages at the beginning and still have to finish Christy (currently ~50%, so that would take some weeks).

More updates here later.

Book 125: Wittliff/Clark: Raggedy Man

I have checked all my 569 rating 6 posts for finding books to buy. It wasn't that many posts, as many posts are modern series and updates, mainly without pics (the best pics are now in the main entries). I could also have used combined tags (rating 6+farm, or rating 6+boys) but this way, I also could find (and found) posts and pics that needs to be rechecked and replaced.

The only notable book, existing and worth buying is Raggedy Man (starring Henry Thomas "E.T." and a younger boy). There's a snippet view on Google books with 7 mentionings (not all are shown, I had a bit more luck with a spelling error). Descriptions seem quite interesting (barefoot, having peeled off his overalls... stood in his jockey shorts...). Today, other results are shown in the classic view, and empty snippets on new Google Books. I also like the actors and setting.

The problem is, that this 1979 book is currently not available/too expensive outside the US. So I have started to check the rating 5 posts.

Update: Neues vom Süderhof - season 4

Searching for books (also see previous post about Wish You Well, f/m rating 7) and checking all movies rated 7-10, I found again this one (this series f/m is rating 8). I previously hadn't re-uploaded these 2 pics (pic 1 from s4e10 showing Patrick on left (also cycling) and Ben in shortalls. Pic 2 is my favourite episode from s4e11 (Patrick kneeing). There are also very good scenes of teen girls (in this and other episodes).

I almost considered buying a book, but I'm sure, that I already bought book #38 Ben macht Karriere (confirmed in update 4), which I think is about s4e11. Obviously no descriptions of bibs in the book and I think I don't own it anymore (or I can't find it).

There are no book previews of these German 90s books on Google books nor Amazon. I don't know the other books. These books are mainly aimed at girls (horse books). As announced, this seried is finally available on DVD. There are audiobooks of early seasons (not containing Patrick and have another actor as Ben).

Main overview post f/m rating up to 8
