There is a new European law here, making non-EU imports much more expensive, previously there was a limit up to 22 EUR (incl shipping) without having to pay taxes. I remember buying new books like The Sugar Creek Gang for ~3,99 EUR including shipping from (German) Amazon ~4 years ago. They used to ship from the UK. Most books now cost 6-8 EUR, some even much more and often many aren't available at all. Many vintage books are OOP and Amazon more and more list mainstream and new books only. Probably few Germans read English books.
On the other hand there are more and more ebooks (and audiobooks). There are new ebooks, but I think only the early books, probably now PD. I found one illustrated version of The Sugar Creek Gang, Watermelon Mystery (for 8 EUR instead of 2) but in the preview there are just unrelated historical paintings! Some foreign editions are illustrated.
I prefer physical books and prefer used books. I often bought books and DVD from the US or UK. UK is no option anymore (as not EU) and shipping is even slower. I haven't found good European English bookstores, either.
For very rare books, there's an option of borrowing books (or digital parts) from libraries (I used that for my new blog), but that is expensive as well.
