Info 15, Books 1: Soup

I also like books, so I start a new chapter and tag books.
I like real stories about farming and fiction as well. Especially childrens books with drawings.
I own some books of the series Soup by Robert Newton Peck. I think with some autobiographical parts, Vermont of the 1930s. Some good illustrations. Different illustrators in different editions for the same book. Soup and his friend nearly always pictured in bibs. In Soup for president there is a scene, where they paint the word Soup in bibs at a house. Some red paint got inside a sleeve of the shirt of one boy and under the belt in his underpants. It's possible to wear bibs with a belt, but I think, that means, that they didn't wear bibs. There is also 1 or 2 films of Soup and I think also without bibs. However good books.

I also own the more famous book of him, A Day No Pigs Would Die. At the beginning a boy helped a cow calfing with his pants. I understand, that he didn't wear underpants while he undress and tied the pants at the calf. It's not said, that they were bibs, but the boy is pictured in bibs on the book cover.

-Comment: A boy in bibs (pictured, I think this must be Ray Dimas). This is a famous movie after the real story of the Native American Chief (1840s-1877) and was nominated for an Oscar. Sorry, I don't know this complete film and I don't like those films. I like Westerns but not films like Winnetou. I think only some short scenes at the beginning and also a riding scene. Bibs are dirty and too small. I don't think, that jeans bibs exist in 1850 (see also earlier post Info 13: Historic photos of boys in bibs in 1880s and later). There are also some other anachronisms.

-Comment: Jean Vanderwilt in light bibs (pictured). I found this film by searching for keyword sharecropper at ImdB, there 7th best film. Film is in Public Domain and can be viewed (streaming or download) at archive.org and other sites. Also released on DVD. There is also a publicity still with a younger boy in dark bibs, but this is a short scene and not very close (minute 51). I don't know the entire film, but I don't expect much good bib scenes or other actors in bibs. Nominated for 3 Oscars. Streaming quality is not very good, but I saw better images, so DVD will be better. Even though I like farm films and historic films, I don't like this bibs or film.

-Comment: Jamie Ballard (?) in blue bibs (pictured) and also earlier in purple bibs. Other databases dates this film in 1987. Perhaps the imdb date is the wide release. I'm not sure, if I have seen this movie on TV, maybe at Halloween. If so, then I can't remember. I watched some parts of this film and assume low-medium bib scenes. Also some wet scenes at a lake, where her brother rescued her. The girl is the younger sister of the main character played by Justin Gocke, 13ys  (I believe only in standard but good dark blue jeans). I think this cold be a thrilling and entertaining film, but there are a lot of these films with witches. I have to see the entire film next broadcasting.

-Comment: A boy (pictured) and another younger child (boy?) in bibs. I don't know their names. This is supposed to be a famous Christmas movie. In the US only? Because of stars Dolly Parton (and her songs), Lee Majors and Bo Hopkins? I can't remember seeing this film or even heard of it and saw only some parts recently. The 7 orphans are are the end in a cabin in the mountains with dim light but now I see in the trailer that there are also more bib scenes outside. I have to see the whole film, I assume some good, but rather few or medium bib scenes. Maybe there are also more actors in bibs. Perhaps this is a good and touching Christmas movie, but I think, there are better ones. I like country music, but prefer classic Christmas songs. I will update this entry, but I don't want to see a Christmas movie now.

Info 13: Historic photos of boys in bibs in 1880s and later

I'm also interested in historic bib images. And I wonder, in what year boys (and young men) first wearing overalls and if the Western films and series like LHOTP are correct.
I think that overalls are mainly used by working men and I learned that the first jeans pants were overalls.
It's not easy to research, as this is not only a part of the history of clothes, but history of child labour, farming and photography.

According to Wikipedia the first one-piece overalls were in 1891.

but the oldest image there is from 1902 (Hiwassee School).
I found 2 images dated 1882 at Denver Library from the Denver Orphans' Home. Although the age, the images seem to be copyrighted, so here the links (pics can be zoomed). There are also other, later pics.

Sometimes, dates of old images are not known correctly, but here the exact date seems to be correct. And this bibs don't look like, as they were the first or first handmade bibs.
Perhaps first work for using bibs was in mines and cotton mills and this is a sad story.
Good sources are school images and genealogy websites.
The problem is that they possibly didn't made much photos in the rural 1800s, so research in books or drawings/paintings will be better. If someone has more details or older images, please comment.

I saw many episodes in the 2000s and like this series. But then I didn't watch out for bibs and of course I can't remember every episode. First I thought of Ruthie in bibs but first I discovered recently was Mary. I like David Gallagher and Scotty Leavenworth but also the plot and whole series. Seemes to be a realistic TV family drama series with typical problems but also some funny scenes. Typical bibs of the 90s. If someone knows other actors in bibs or even David Gallagher, please leave a comment.

Info 12: Updates - Crazy in Alabama

One big update of film Crazy in Alabama. I bought it and I'm very disappointed. Very few bib scenes and no Lucas Black in bibs although shown on DVD cover and trailer. They filmed too much and shortened a lot. I changed my rating from 6 to 2. See entry (via tag rating 2 or blog search).

I also have added recently some missing pics of Grapes of Wrath, Los olvidados, The Waltons season 8, The war and also did some minor other edits.

Rupert Patterson Wants to be a Super Hero

-Comment: Sean Campbell (pictured left) as Super Hero in blue bibs, Melissa DiLuigi as Alley in blue jeans shortalls pictured right, later also in beige shortalls. One fat and one normal weighted girl in shortalls.
I saw this film some years ago, but didn't have a good recording and didn't remembered it well. So I bought this DVD and watched it today. Main character in bibs only the last 15-20 minutes. Alley also in some few bib scenes at the beginning and end.
This is a good and entertaining kid's film with some funny as well with some touching and scaring,horrorlike scenes (rated PG). Also some bullying and hitting in the groin (boy and man). 2 short cycling scenes by the girl, Rupert went swimming shirtless (without bibs), went into a creek in bibs, is grapped by a man at his suspenders and is being tied with a rope. Rupert also cycling but only in his black Super suit. He has freckles and blue eyes and looked like 7-8 ys. Although rather few bib scenes I rate 6-7. There is also a Canadian TV series called Super Rupert (2000, 6 episodes), starring Adam Butcher, but I haven't seen any bib scenes there, yet but have to confirm that. No trailer available at YouTube for either film or series.
