By coincidence, I found a nice cover with a boy sitting on the grass in light blue bibs. 1959 edition, publisher Neuer Jugendschriften-Verlag. Cover image by "Oliver" (Oliver Vaberg ?). Illustrations by Jochen (J. Vaberg). I don't know of any inside illustrations with bibs at least a boy with suspenders (rear view).
A ghost story for kids by Johanna Spyri ("Heidi"). The text (1892) is Public Domain (unlike the illustrations). I have briefly checked for the German word "Latz" for bib, but haven't found anything. Later editions show a boy in Lederhosen.
I have finished the "Circle C Adventures" and there were only few descriptions of the boy. I'm currently reading one of the Western books of this author but don't assume bibs scenes there.
