Also a good bedroom scene where the boy is in bed and the bibs hanging over a chair.

There is also a 1983 remake (probably in color), but I haven't searched for that, yet. The books also needs to be checked ("prototype of Canadian Prairie Fiction" and another movie was Oscar nominated).
