Richard De Neut wore bibs as well on a publicity pic. In the background on pic 3 there's a blonde kid, probably a girl with suspenders, but I think this is a dress (also sitting rear view).

On a publicity pic (Eagles Club), there's 11 yo Harold Switzer. Very brief scene of him near the beginning, sitting and standing up on the right (partial view, pic 4), later sitting, headshot and from a distance, but bibs mainly hidden by an accordion. I almost missed Alfalfa during a fast search as his shirt has a similar color and didn't recognize him.

Rating ~4-5. One of the better late movies. 18 minutes. But bibs only in the first half.

Story 157: Too handsome for overalls?

Around the late 80s and 90s, overalls were a trendy fashion for kids and ladies, also depicted in movies and series. In the 30s, country kids, tomboys and teens (like at one-room schoolhouses) are often shown very handsome, but I doubt that this is realistic. Yes, there are actors and it depends on the characters.

In some series like The Waltons, there are several handsome actors including supporting actors, like Tom in s4e9 (pic 1, rear view in the post for this episode, rating 10). Besides the 70s haircuts (especially of Jim-Bob) there are some few others shown like fat Clarence in season 6 and 7 and also handicapped characters (Elizabeth after accident).

In Little House of the Prairie (also 70s and 80s), there are handsome kids as well, but I think most characters are more realistic. Pic 2 was from s3e20 and pic 3 from s1e5 (Story 21: LHOTP - The Love of Johnny Johnson, maybe I had another pic there).

Fat or red haired characters are also common in movies but often just one actor. Different characters including fat, black and handsome kids are already shown in Our Gang in the 20s. Very rarely shown are ugly characters (except fat ones).

Maybe I should make a list of most handsome actors, but it's often included in the highest rated posts. And tastes are different.

Another thing is a handsome actor and not matching bibs. Ripped bibs, too tight bibs, unusual colors, unusual length, fabric and the like. Imagine Tom Pizey in The Enid Blyton Secret Series or Huck & the King of Hearts in very tight bibs. Just some thoughts.

I've rechecked this 1.5 years ago. Nice setting and very good younger boys in jeans. But boy in bibs is quite old.

By checking other movies in the series "The Shaping of the American Nation", I found this on YouTube. He mainly has British films of the 70s and earlier, partly b&w. Many are personal short films. I have checked all icons of the vids and checked some movies which might contain bibs, but I haven't found anything else.

Another great educational film from  The Learning Company of America (LCA), this time from the mid 70s. Aka "The Shaping of the American Nation: The Frontier Experience". On YouTube. I almost missed this, uploaded some time ago.

Great bibs, almost rating 8.

Directed and produced by Barbara Loden, who also starred. There are several other movies in this American Nation series, but most are too early for containing bibs (maybe 1 or 2 more).

Available on DVD (Phoenix Learning Group, $60 including rights showing at schools).

A Country Practice (1981) - season 3

By coincidence, I found 30 yo Anne Tenney in faded bibs (confirmed bibs, not a dress) doing farm work (feeding chicken). Overlapping straps. Pic from a DVD trailer of season 3 (1983, starting with episode 107).  She appeared from 1982-1986. Also a young man (Grant Dodwell) painting in white bibs in ep 107, s3e1 and an old man (farmer) in beige bibs sitting on a tractor in ep 110, Penny Cook standing in beige bibs.

Rating ~4 for her. Good bibs. I have to check more episodes. (Also for other/younger actors/actresses).

Update 2: Pete’s Dragon (2016)

As announced, this has recently been aired, but I've only seen the beginning.

Oona Laurence wore tight, long bibs. Some good scenes like climbing up a tree, falling down, sitting on the ground and the like.

The movie itself seems very poor (compared to the 1977 classic, boys rating 5+). And a very poor dragon.

I assume few scenes at the beginning only ? Quite good bibs, though.

Battle 2. This time The Enid Blyton Secret Series (also has a girl in shortalls, rating 7) and P.U.N.K.S., rating 6. Sorry, I already had Enid Blyton. Both pics appear next each other in the top posts some days ago.

Fair: No. Enid Blyton is much older and has both boys and girls and is a famous series.

Surprisingly, PUNKS won, at least in May. 22 vs 21.

In 2019 so far PUNKS has 28 hits and Enid Blyton 32.

In 2018 PUNKS had 45, Enid Blyton just 27.

In 2017 PUNKS had 36, Enid Blyton 94. (Maybe I had an update.)

I have rechecked this episode now completely. Rather few good scenes. The bib pocket is medium blue (I never noticed before), the bibs much darker. One very good kneeing scene of him. Lance Kerwin in bibs would be much better.

Story 156: Bathing costumes

There are several movies and series showing bathing costumes, mainly set between 1910s-1930s, like The Waltons (s1e7), Looking for Miracles, Road to Avonlea, Wind at My Back, Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), Two Weeks with Love (all with entries here) and some more on my sailor suit blog like J'ai voulu rire comme les autres, Morte a Venezia, Rheinsberg (1967) and others. But I don't remember bathing costumes with braces at the straps.

Bathing costumes are like shortalls except for the fabric. Althought there are also shortalls out of cotton fabric. And often wet scenes. Also of interest short union suits.

I like raw denim bibs, but I don't like her, nor tight bibs.

Update: Pic from a new remastered version (derived from a 35mm print) by ClassicFlix. To be released on the Restored Silents Vol 1 BD or DVD. Not released by April 2024. The only other 35mm restored silent (already released on the Centennial Bonis disc and on YouTube) is The Big Show (1923).
